While some people may want to color their hair using bold color, others may want their hair to highlight their natural features. In today’s blog, we will give you a few tips on how to choose a hair color that will complement your skin tone. Continue reading below, and be sure to contact Rayna Hair Artistry in West Hollywood for all of your hair coloring needs.

Why Skin Tone Matters

When you’re choosing a hair color, you don’t just want a color that looks good, you want a color that looks amazing. Not only do you have to decide between brunette, blonde, and red, you also have to decide which hue of each color will look best – that’s where your skin tone comes in.

You’ve probably heard the term “undertones” associated with your skin. The undertones are the underlying pigments of your skin tone that determine whether you have a cool, warm, or neutral tone. Those with cooler toned skin have undertones that are pink and olive, while those with a warm skin tone have undertones of yellow and gold. Those who are neutral have undertones of both. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to distinguish which is which by just looking at yourself in the mirror, so to help you determine whether you are cool, warm, or neutral, we’ve provided some tips below.

Start by removing all of your makeup

It’s difficult to determine your true skin tone when you’re wearing a lot of makeup. Foundation, contouring, and eyeshadow all cover up your natural color, and if you try to decide what kind of skin tone you have based on your makeup, you could end up choosing the wrong hair color.

Look at your veins

It sounds strange to study the color of your veins, but they can actually help determine the undertones of your skin. Start by going to a well-lit room, then look at the veins on the underside of your wrist. If you notice that the color of the veins are blue or purple, you are most likely cool-toned. On the other hand, the veins look more green, then you are warm-toned.

Look into your eyes

If you want to do another test to be sure that you are warm- or cool-toned, another place you can look are your eyes. Get close to a mirror and look at the color of your eyes. If you notice gold flecks then you are warm-toned, but if you notice blue or green flecks in your eyes, then you are cool-toned.

Choose a Hair Color

Once you have determined whether or not you are cool- or warm-toned, the next step is to choose a hair color! Believe it or not, but the different hues of brown, red, and blonde actually have warmer and cooler tones to them just like your skin. That being said, your first thought may be to choose a cool-toned hair color to go with your cool-toned skin, but you would be mistaken.

You want your hair color to complement your skin tone, so you will want to choose a hair tone that is opposite of your skin tone. For example, if you are warm-toned, you will want to choose a hair color that is cool-toned.
